Salt Lake City Utah is well known for snow and winter sports. Some winters Utah has not had a lot of snow. This can really affect the water reservoirs in the springtime. When the snow melts and fills the water reservoirs. If there has been a lot of snow during the winter months the water reservoirs fill up and take Salt Lake City through the dry summer months. Utah water supply benefits immensely if there has been a lot of snow during the winter. Once spring hits and the snow begins to melt the water reservoirs fill up and that water is then used during the dry months. There have been years and Utah did not have a lot of snow. If that happens Utah water supply is low and water conservation needs to be done.
The snow melting does help in the spring and the summertime to fill the reservoirs with water to help during drier seasons. However, the opposite is true as well. If there is too much snowpack then the opposite could be true. Instead of just filling the reservoirs they could fill up and continue filling causing floods in some areas. Residents have to be ready for both situations where floods could happen or where there is not enough snowpack to fill the reservoirs when the water melts. If the summer does not bring enough storms to the area, then water conservation needs to be done by all residents. During the winter months even if there is snow on the ground residents do need to conserve water. The snow does not melt and give residents water until the spring. During the cold months, residents do need to conserve water during that time. In Utah during the cold months watering your lawn should not be necessary. The temperatures are more often than not below freezing and the lawn does not require water. Of course, the lawn will not look great during those months unless you go with artificial turf. Then your lawn will look great year-round. Of course, we still take showers during the cold months as well during the warm months. When it is cold and the water reservoirs have not gotten the water from the melting snow water conservation is very important. This means taking shorter showers to conserve on how much water we use. Since the residents of Salt Lake City do live in below-freezing temperatures it is very important to make sure that your pipe don't burst. This can be avoided by letting the faucet drip during below-freezing temperatures. You should also have your pipes checked for any leaks or any problems probably before the colder temperatures start. If Utah does have a lot of snow during the winter then water should be plentiful during the spring and summer months. However, it is important to note that you still need to conserve water.
